How to Become a Professional Pet Groomer

For this week’s #WiseWednesday post, we thought we would cover a question our groomers receive often; just how do you become a professional pet groomer?

It’s understandable why many would be interested in the pet grooming profession. After all, who wouldn’t want to work with cute dogs and cats all day?

However, pet grooming is one of those jobs that many just don’t know how to get started in.

Fear not! In this article, we will go through what you need to know to get started as a professional groomer. So let’s see what we can find out!

What Do You Need to Know to be a Pet Groomer?

Pet grooming requires much more knowledge (and skill!) than many first realize.

Not only will you be required to learn how to properly use your grooming tools effectively and safely, but how to perform the many different cuts and trims that are popular amongst different breeds.

Different breeds require different cuts; therefore, you would need to be knowledgeable of all the popular breeds out there and how their coat should conform to the breed standard. You would approach grooming a Poodle in a much different way than how you would with a Golden Retriever, for example.

On top of this, it’s recommended that all groomers learn CPR and first aid for animals, similar to other jobs that work with pets.

How Do You Learn What You Need to Know to Become a Pet Groomer?

So where do you get all this knowledge from?

There are pet grooming schools throughout America, which if passed, rewards students with a certification. Many aim to teach everything from grooming technique to the differences between breeds.

The National Dog Groomers Association of America offers in-person workshops and a certification to those who are interested in learning the craft. There are more schools and courses throughout the country if this isn’t right for you.

However, most professional pet groomers will tell you that the quickest and most effective way to learn is actually working on the job! Therefore, working in a pet salon as a trainee or assistant can be a great way of getting that valuable experience.
