Sore Paws This Winter? How to Help!

Have you noticed that your pet has been walking on some very sore paws this winter? During this time of year, it’s common to see cats and dogs with dry, cracked, and sometimes infected paws, leading to pain or potentially even lameness.

So in this #WiseWednesday post, we will be taking a look at why winter wreaks such havoc on our pet’s vulnerable paws, along with methods on treating any irritation and injury that may occur.

So let’s get our pets running around like normal again!

Why is Winter So Rough on Our Pet’s Paws?

Wintery weather leads to conditions that are tough for us to walk on, never mind our pets!

While you may be safe and sound wearing some snow boots, pets have to come into direct contact with the cold floor. Add a bit of ice and snow and the risk of dryness and irritation begins to soar!

The cold floor can easily lead to the chapping and cracking of paw pads, while snow and other debris can easily get caught between their claws, leading to constant irritation.

Things can get even more worrying if the pathway has been treated with salt and ice-melting chemicals. All of this can further irritate your poor pet’s paws, and in some cases, can even lead to burns.

Another issue that can be brought on with such treated pathways is the fact that your dog or cat can easily lick the salt and chemicals off their paws as part of their grooming process. This can be toxic and lead our pets to become very sick indeed.

So what can we do about all this?

How to Care For Your Pet’s Sore Paws During the Winter

A good way to look after your pet’s paws during the winter period is to incorporate some paw care into your daily routine, best done directly after they have been outside for a while.

First, give their paws a gentle wash in warm water, to remove any debris or salt. Once this is done, give their paws a detailed check over, especially between the claws. If there is any remaining grit, remove it with a pair of tweezers!

Finally, use a paw moisturizer to help revitalize their dry paws. See here for some moisturizer recommendations for dogs, and here for some ideas for cats.

Keep this up each day, and you’ll significantly lower the risks of injury and infection.
